Before I begin with any field notes or theory, it seems only fit to include an introduction to my field site. For this project, I will be working with an all-girls, preK-12, private school located just 20 minutes outside of Philadelphia. My role here is to participate in discussions with students and faculty, observe classes that make use of technology, and provide feedback to my supervisor. Alongside of this, I will also be reading up on media literacy.
Academics
The school where my field placement will take place consists of a Lower, Middle, and Upper school with an enrolment of approximately 600. Students are required to take classes in multiple disciplines within the broad curriculum. Academically rigorous, graduates from the school find themselves matriculating at some of the top universities in the country and garnering national honours.
Socioeconomic and Racial Diversity
As an elite, private school, the majority of students are undeniably wealthy. However, 20% of students receive scholarships and grants to study, allowing a certain amount of access to lower income students. In terms of racial diversity, students of colour represent 37% of the student body. A good number of students also hold dual citizenship and have parents with birthplaces in Liberia, the Philippines, Korea, China, Japan, India and Pakistan.
